Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, commonly known as green vitriol or iron(II) sulfate heptahydrate, is a blue-green crystalline solid. It
has a molar mass of 278.05 g/mol and crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. The compound is soluble in water, with a
solubility of 48.6 g/100 mL at 50°C, and slightly soluble in ethanol. It has a melting point of 64°C, at which it begins to lose its water
of crystallization. The density of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is approximately 1.89 g/cm³. It is odorless but can oxidize in moist air,
forming a brown coating of ferric sulfate. This compound is commonly used in various applications, including as a reducing agent,
in water treatment, and in the synthesis of other iron compounds.
