Benzoic acid is a white crystalline solid with a pleasant, characteristic odor. It is sparingly soluble in cold water (approximately
0.34 g/100 mL at 20°C), but more soluble in hot water and organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene. Its melting point
is relatively high, around 122°C, and it sublimes readily at temperatures above this point. Benzoic acid exhibits typical carboxylic
acid properties, being acidic in nature and forming salts (benzoates) with bases. It is stable under normal conditions but can undergo
decarboxylation when heated strongly. In addition to its use as a food preservative, benzoic acid finds applications in the manufacture
of dyes, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals due to its antimicrobial properties and ability to modify pH levels in various formulations.
