Chemical Properties
The carbon-oxygen double bond on the aldehyde group will be conjugated to the large π-bond on the benzene ring, which has a
total of 8 π-electrons. The chemical properties of benzaldehyde are similar to those of fatty aldehydes, but there are differences.
Reduction of benzaldehyde with the reagents used in the reduction of fatty aldehydes yields, in addition to the main product benzyl
alcohol, a number of tetrasubstituted o-diol compounds and homodiphenylglycol. In the presence of potassium cyanide, two molecules
of benzaldehyde produce benzoin by the donation of hydrogen atoms. Benzaldehyde can also carry out electrophilic substitution
reactions on the aromatic nucleus, mainly generating meso-substituted products, such as nitration when the main product is
m-nitrobenzaldehyde.It is very easy to be oxidised in the air, generating white benzoic acid. It can react with amides to produce
pharmaceutical intermediates.
