Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is a white crystalline salt that is highly soluble in water. It has a density of 1.53 g/cm³ and a melting
point of 338°C, although it sublimates rather than melts at high temperatures, turning directly from a solid to a gas. In water,
ammonium chloride dissolves readily, forming a slightly acidic solution due to the release of hydrogen ions (H+). It is odorless and
has a salty taste. The compound exhibits a cooling effect when dissolved in water, a property utilized in cooling packs. Ammonium
chloride crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and can form dendritic patterns, sometimes referred to as "ferns," when it sublimates
and re-deposits. It is used in various applications, including as a fertilizer, in medicine as an expectorant, and in the food industry as
a yeast nutrient.
