Sodium formate has a molecular weight of 68.01 g/mol and melts at around 253°C, decomposing at higher temperatures to yield
hydrogen gas and sodium oxalate. In aqueous solutions, it acts as a weak base due to the hydrolysis of the formate ion, which can
slightly increase the pH of the solution. It is used in several industries, including as a buffering agent in dyeing and printing textiles,
as a de-icing agent for airport runways, and in the leather tanning process. Additionally, sodium formate can be employed as a food
additive and in the manufacturing of other chemicals. Its relatively low toxicity makes it a safer alternative to some other de-icing
chemicals and industrial agents.
