Magnesium chloride
Magnesium chloride is a white or colorless crystalline solid at room temperature. It is highly soluble in water, and its solubility
increases with temperature. When dissolved, it dissociates into magnesium and chloride ions. Magnesium chloride has a melting
point of about 714°C (1317°F) and a boiling point of around 1412°C (2574°F). It is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs
moisture from the air, which can cause it to form a brine solution. The compound exists in an anhydrous form as well as various
hydrated forms, such as hexahydrate. It has a density of approximately 2.32 g/cm³ in its anhydrous state. Magnesium chloride
exhibits good thermal stability but can decompose at higher temperatures. In its solid state, Magnesium chloride has an ionic
lattice structure, which contributes to its high melting and boiling points. It is commonly used in applications such as de-icing roads,
dust control, and as a source of magnesium for various chemical processes.

Application: Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) has a variety of applications across different industries. In the chemical industry, it is
used as a precursor to produce magnesium metal through electrolysis. Its hygroscopic nature makes it an effective de-icing agent
for roads during winter, as it lowers the freezing point of water and prevents ice formation. Magnesium chloride is also employed
in the food industry as a firming agent and coagulant, particularly in the preparation of tofu. Additionally, it serves as a nutrient
supplement in animal feed and as a source of magnesium in fertilizers to promote plant growth. In the pharmaceutical industry,
magnesium chloride is utilized for its therapeutic properties to treat hypomagnesemia, a condition characterized by low levels of
magnesium in the blood. Moreover, it finds use in the textile and paper industries for dyeing and sizing purposes, enhancing the
quality and durability of the final products. These diverse applications highlight the versatility and importance of magnesium chloride
in various sectors.
