Strontium Chloride

Strontium chloride hexahydrate is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 61°C. It is highly soluble in water, forming a colorless, clear solution, and moderately soluble in alcohol. This compound is known for its hygroscopic nature, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air, which is typical for many hydrated salts. In terms of chemical properties, strontium chloride hexahydrate is a source of strontium ions in various chemical reactions. It decomposes upon heating, losing its water of hydration and eventually forming anhydrous strontium chloride. The compound reacts with sulfuric acid to produce insoluble strontium sulfate and with phosphates to form strontium phosphate. Its applications include use in pyrotechnics for producing red flames, in medical imaging for bone scans, and as a precursor in the preparation of other strontium compounds.
